About This Site
The Slow Down Bowdoinham website is dedicated to monitoring and promoting responsible driving in our community. Our goal is to encourage drivers to respect posted speed limits, which exist for the safety and quality of life in our town.
Every day, speeds that push far above this limit don't just mean more traffic; they mean less time for community connection and a higher risk for everyone. This site serves as a friendly check-in, reminding every driver that responsible driving is about respecting the community that calls Bowdoinham home.
Our Mission
We aim to:
- Raise awareness about the importance of speed limits in our community
- Document speed violations to encourage responsible driving
- Provide a platform for community members to discuss traffic safety
- Support efforts to improve local traffic conditions
How It Works
Our speed camera system captures vehicles that exceed the speed limit. The videos are reviewed to estimate speeds, and this data is used to create reports that help us understand traffic patterns in our area.
The speed monitoring system is built on speed-camera, an open-source project by Claude Pageauc (licensed under Apache 2.0). The system uses OpenCV to detect motion in a defined area, track vehicles as they pass, and estimate speed based on calibrated distance measurements. When a vehicle is detected, it records a short video clip and logs the data.
